    • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Reason For Banning: There was many prolific words in this book and had a very racist atmosphere and mood to it. The “N” word, a word most commonly used very poorly today was a main reason for the banning of this book

  1. Beloved, Toni Morrison, 1987
Reason for banning: Received many complains against the book due to its violence, sexual content and discussion of bestiality.

  2. The Harry Potter Series, J.K. Rowling’s
Reason: Promotes witch craft, character behaviors, dark and violent creatures.

  3. Animal Farm by Gerorge Orwell
Reason for its banning was because of the Allied forces believed it was critiquing the USSR in the 1940’s, and was to controversial to print during wartime. A play of Animal Farm was banned in 1991, Kenya because of its critiquing of corrupt leaders.

  4. The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1925
Reason for banning: The Great Gatsby was challenged by the Baptist College in South Carolina, due to bad language, and sexual references. Today, the “Modern Library ranks the book as the second best English-language book of the 20th century.”

  5. The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck, 1939

  6. To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee, 1960

  7. The scarlet letter by: Nathaniel Hawthorne
Reasons why banned: sinful behaviors, and morally wrong, also it conflicts with community values. some parents even called it “pornographic and obscene.”

  8. Candide by Voltaire
It was seized my customs in 1930 when it was headed for Harvard. It’s reason for being seized was “obscenity.” The US Post Office also did not allow a book publisher to include it in it’s catalog in 1944.
